This envelope was mailed from the mountainous region of western Panama (and not from the Canal Zone itself). The cover has double the going rate of 7 cents for airmail, and double the postal tax of one cent.

The return address is the Canal Zone town of Pedro Miguel in the center of Panama. Pedro Miguel is the location of one of the lock chamber of the Panama Canal on the Pacfic slope of Panama.

What does the postmark read? I can only make out "El Volcan" on the bottom.

The top of the CDS reads "Agencia de Correos". El Volcán refers to the region surrounding Panama's tallest mountain (a volcano) called Volcán Baru.

I heard mentioned on the radio the other day that the flag of Panama is the only one in the world to be different on each side - is that correct?

Stampgal,

It is Paraguay's flag that differs on both sides.

Quote:
The National flag of Paraguay was formally approved and acquired on 25 th of November; 1842.Three equal horizontal bands of color comprise the Paraguay Flag. Among the stripes, the upper one is red, the middle band is white, and the underside band is blue. The color scheme of the Paraguay Ensign is influenced by French "tri color" concept, where red signifies bravery and nationalism, white symbolizes integrity and peace, blue represents liberation and generosity. This is noteworthy that Paraguay Ensign is the only national Flag with two dissimilar emblems on the reverse and obverse. The central parts of the obverse and reverse sides of the flag are depicted with Paraguay "state coat of arms" and Paraguay "Treasury Seal" respectively.

Thanks Tomiseksj!
Whooops
That's what happens when you try to listen to the radio over the noise of two loud kids!
Still quite an interesting fact, entirely irrelevant to the topic, though, sorry!

As it relates to the adddressee, Rev. A.W. Maddox, it sounds as if he had quite an interesting career:

Quote:
The Presbyterian Church of Tupper Lake, N. Y., had its beginning in the summer of 1900, when services were held in the school house at Faust by a Mr. Ferguson, then, by Rev. Joseph McNeil of Piercefield, and next by John Nevin, a Princeton theological student. The church building is the same that was formerly at Brandon, and was brought from there to Faust in 1901 and re-erected at a cost of about four hundred dollars. It was not until December 10, 1905, that incorporation was effected, the Adirondack Mission contributing meantime to the support of the undertaking. Rev. Aaron W. Maddox, since famed as the lumberjack missionary, served the society as stated supply from November, 1901, to April, 1911, and then as pastor for two years and a half.

From some of what I've read, the Reverend was diagnosed with tuberculosis at an early age and was sent to the mountains to recover and ultimately found his way into missionary work among the lumberjacks of the Adirondack Mountains, thus the nickname "The Lumberjack Missionary".

An interesting read on the work of the addressee of this cover (Rev. A.W. Maddox) as it appeared in the Utica, NY Daily Press of 10/31/1931:

Subsequent newspaper articles suggest that he died while in Hamilton, Bermuda on 03/12/1952.
