I'm going to put together a kit to get my Grandson started in our hobby. I have several questions for you folks who are young or have youngsters around.

1. Should I go U.S. only, or worldwide?
2. What is a good beginner album these days? I would want it to be expandable in case he takes to this.

Thanks for your advice!

Bob, he's 11 years old.

Greg:

You left out one important detail,

How old is he ?

If you go with US only, The Liberty Album is a good one,
the cost I believe is about 80 bucks.

I was able to get my 6 year old grandson interested in stamps
about three months ago.

He loves the Star wars stamps, Disney stamps, the Superheros,
dinosaurs, animal stamps, firetrucks, Pokemon, and Harry Potter
stamps.

I have made him an album, using the Steiner Blank quad-ruled pages, since his collection is a mish-mash of tropicals.

Because of his age, he refers to his album as

Tony's Cool Stamp book.

He is already able, to lick-em and stick-em

I think a good way to start out is to have him look through your album(s), stock book, & duplicates and see what catches his eye that way it is his collection. Sometimes just finding stamps that are topical and depict his interest:Sports, scouting, cars, animals, etc. You could also start out just using stock pages or a stock book until he figures out how he wants to approach/organize his collection. Do you have a stamp store, hobby store in your area? Hobby lobby has packets of US and world wide stamps, hinges, mounts, small albums, stock pages; pretty much everything a beginner would need. I would love to have a Jr. stamp club to assist.

Stamperdude, the Scouts are always looking for presenters at their meetings--that would be a good way to spark their interest and maybe a club could form from there. Just get a hold of a local Scout leader and go from there.
That's great info about Hobby Lobby! Thanks!

Dude, I was in Hobby Lobby two days ago and that's why I'm asking. They have a 30% off sale on all their stamp and coin supplies this week. Unfortunately they don't have much and they are the only store within 200 miles that carries anything useful at all. I'd probably end up buying bulk stamps online, but the album, tongs, and such I can get there. The prices are pretty good!

I'd love for him to look at my stuff, but he's also 200+ miles away and I'm doing this kinda in the blind.

If he gets interested in worldwide stamps, buy him a world map. My daughter is 9 years old and when she works on her stamps she puts the map open on the table and then she can see where the countries are. She works right on top of the map.

By the way, when it's decided what his area of interest is, post it here and I'll send him ( by way of you) some stamp duplicates that I have.

Greg, I agree with Stamerdude as well - show your grandson a variety of stamps/covers, etc., and let his interests drive what or if he collects. Nothing will ruin a good hobby like an adult forcing it on a kid.

Charles.

It's a good idea to see what catches his eye.
With Emma she likes the dogs and cats so she keeps them in HER album.
Then we do all the others by country together.
With Emma it was really good to be here because she met some realy nice people and got stamps in the mail and this has encouraged her.
If she only did the one subject or country she would be very limited.
(Were still in it for fun not money)
If you decide to and need some from Australia email me and I will post some to you.
The other thing is the world map suggestion.
Emma is learning geography (but don't tell her[/pink]) by looking up where the stamps are from. When we first got a new map her first question was "Where is Germany"

I recommended this movie before for new collectors. It is an easy
movie to watch and the soundtrack is wonderful and although they start with Canadian stamps, many different countries and their stamps are represented. Canadian 158 Bluenose "man on the mast" is the leading man!

Tommy Tricker and the Stamp Traveller ...Netflix has it.

Greg if your Hobby Lobby has tongs and other pieces of equipment like that I wanna come for a visit. I have atleast 6 of them with in 50 miles of me and none of them carry anything more then 2 or 3 different types of albums, hinges, mounts, and maybe about 6 different topical packages of stamps. Your luicky to have a store that carries the tongs as well.
