Lately my tastes are turning more and more towards older postcards with interesting stamps and postmarks..it does not seem like a voluntary thing..they just call out to me..well at least the stamp is still important to me !!

The study of deltoids???

LOL.

Actually, the appeal of old postcards and covers is undeniable. You get the stamps, the cancels, plus whole lot more!

It may be a collecting progression. I started collecting WW then specialized U.S. pre-1940. As I came to the point of needing only the stamps that I can never afford I had to do something. Cancels, oh yes all those lovely cancels! Started on expo cancels and now moving into all areas of early machine cancels.

Why change? You can be both a philatelist and deltiologist and, for that matter, a marcophilist, too!

I love old postcards myself, and pick some up from time to time. But I only actively look for postcards from Finnøy municipality though. Luckily, collecting postcard doesn't rule out stamps, it just means you will need a little more space.

I also like postcards, front & back, the picture, the stamp and
the postmark.

Isn't the term deltiology used primarily for an unused
post card without the reference to the philatelic aspect?

Phil

This is not a bad thing <G>

I have gone through this same phase and in fact most of my buying at shows, auctions etc are either postcards or postal history. However, having said this, I still buy stamps here and there. So, to sum up, don't worry, the stamp portion of the hobby is really incurable

Phil,

Far from being problematic, I think it is a natural extension of your participation in the hobby. Some folks can fill holes in albums only so long and it is natural and normal for some to drift over towards postal history.

I have found that since I have been in the hunt for my Machin covers that the interest and perhaps even excitement of the hunt has gone up tremendously. Early today, I realized I had a cover with a piece of the One Pound Wedgwood booklet. Although it didn't have the LB 1/2p Machin, it was a great find for me nevertheless since that is usually found on philatelic covers and this was the real thing and hence much more interesting and valuable for me.

So, enjoy your postcards.

-Larry

As far as deltiology is concerned, take a look at some of the links to these collections of postcards and then decide:
