This 2 cent Washington is perf 10, I could not find a watermark, but the argument become moot when I rule out a type I or type II

Rule out type I. The top line on the toga is not faint, and the slanted lines are NOT thin on top and thick on bottom.

Rule out type II. NO vertical line on the sideburn

Rule out type III. No vertical line on the sideburn.

So what do I have, Please help. Thanks in advance - Jeff

Jeff,

I think you have a type III Scott 492.

Here is the sideburn line description from AskPhil's Washington-Franklin Identifier ( http://www.askphil.org/W-F/Index.htm ):

Quote:
Illustrations 3A and 3B
3A: The horizontal shading lines just to the left of the lock of hair in front of the ear are not joined at their right ends.
3B: Several of the horizontal shading lines just to the left of the lock of hair in front of the ear are joined at their right ends by a curved line.

And the example they provide:

To me it looks like your scanned stamp most closely matches the 3B example.

Steve

Jeff- it can't be a T-I or II because albeit faint, there is an extra shading line in the ribbon fold. Really looks to me to be a weak-impression Type III. Difficult to see the top line on the rope,or the dot(s) in the right circle below the top leaves on the right side. Normal Type-III would have 3 dots in the shape of a "V". Sometimes difficult to tell from a scanned image-- hope this helps- Ray

you mean 3a and I would agree just the faintest trace of a line up from the bottom but not touching the horizontal sideburn lines! you did mean 3a right? - jeff

No, I meant 3B.

This is the best I can do from your scan, but the vertical line appears to connect the 4 horizontal lines within the circled area.
