Look what happens when I try to view this item:

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI...TRK:MEWAX:IT

The item is a large lot of German stamps and covers from WWI and WWII.

It's listed for sale by a seller in the same country as that in which I live myself (Australia) but I'm still not allowed to view it.

What a joke!!

JimJam, I just clicked on your link and had the whole thing pop up, pictures and all. A temporary glitch maybe?

Were you loged into the US or Ozzie site when it blocked you?
Maybe try both login locations.

Gavin

I'm logged in to Australian ebay at the moment.

I'm not sure whether I can bid if I'm logged into another ebay site.

jimjam, I wonder why they would be blocking this. There are many images of nazi items and a lot of military pics but nothing that I would have thought was restricted in the land of Oz. I'm interested to see if others in Australia can access it.

That lot should go for a pretty penny. I don't see anything particularly rare, but the variety and breadth would make it a blast to pick through. I'm a sucker for the full sheets, though those are outside my collecting area.

Items relating to Nazi Germany are often special restriction items. While working for the U.S. Dept of Defense our installation was the repository for over 2000 pieces of German art that was removed after the war. The collection included a large number of propaganda paintings and several of extremely graphic violent scenes. And additionally over 150 paintings and drawing by Hitler. The U.S. government regarded these items as restricted and did not allow viewing by the public. Luckily, I had almost unlimited access and it was a very moving collection when you reflect of the implications in a historical perspective.

In 1990 the US returned much of this to Germany however anything with a portrait of Hitler, a swastika, propaganda, violence or the works of Hitler were not returned. They where boxed up and seal until 2045. The events of WWII have resulted in many cases of extreme restriction and censorship. It appears it is easier to view sexual explicit material than it is to view historical material with a swastika.

Welcome to the bold new world. (My rant for the day)

Russ, that's extremely informative -and of course quite insane.

It all seems disturbingly Orwellian ... interestingly, I've discovered that schools in this country no longer encourage students to read the book to which I'm alluding ('1984') ... the idea seems to be to bowdlerise history as they once bowdlerised Shakespeare! ... it also seems outrageously incompatible with the idea, which I think we're still supposed to believe, that we live in free societies.

BTW my access is still blocked - it's obviously not a temporary glitch.
