I thought this would be an easy one, but it has me stumped! Can anyone ID this one?

I was originally going to guess a PSS-255, but in previous threads, I had inquired about some similar NY, NY Precancels that I have that look similar but not precisely the same as the example shown above. In those cases, I was advised that the precancel types were as shown below:

Now if I take the above example of a PSS-255 and compare it against Frankie's, the spacing doesn't match up (between bars) and the "O" in "YORK" is oval and not round. Are these minor variances all grouped together as the same precancel type?

Just curious as to why some cities have numerous precancel types with ever so slight variances when the obvious variances in the above examples are seemingly being grouped together under the same type.

Thanks for your thoughts WT1. I'm reshowing the stamp, this time with measurements, so hopefully this will aid in getting a definite ID.

Your last sentence weighs heavy with my thoughts about the catalog. I agree that there seems to be too many variations being grouped as one catagory, only to be footnoted with numbers to justify it's existence within the group. If my example does not fit into any group, will it 1) be footnoted to fit, 2) listed into a group not in the cataglog or 3) assigned a new "L" number and listed at the end of the listing?

Sure, it's easy to be a backseat driver to someone's time and effort of putting out IMHO a great guide - believe me I've done one on one of my other hobbies and it's no easy task! Like all guidebooks, it's only as complete as what it currently known.

As long as I question what I can't find or not sure where a precancel fits, you will see it here!

Frankie
