Just trying to update a couple values. Can someone please give me the 2011 values for the following all MNH 184, 214, 219, 328, 398, 413, 455, 457,619, [920-921(blocks of 4 with imprint salvedge). Also noticed on the 398 does anyone have a comparison between carmine and carmine lake? Huge price difference and just want to be sure on that one. Thanks These all came in the following small binder .

As for the binder ... wow! It's gorgeous!

I have the 2008 values but wanted 2011, The values that were written on some had to have been from 15-20 yrs ago compared to the 08. May sell the whole binder as it sits , figure 25-50% of cat would be doing well mostly because of the display factor. If I knew what was missing I'd try and complete it but getting the stamps would be easier than the pages. |

Quote: Hmmmm $976 catalog-- now for the real world . Any ideas for starting point take all with album? Nitro, The prices I gave you were for VF NH copies of the numbers you listed. The prices for NH copies of the stamps that you have shown, by grade, total $247.25. In the order shown, their catalog numbers, my assessment of grade, and catalog values are: 413 FVF $80 457 VG $10 455 F $7.50 619 F $14 620 FVF $3 398 FVF $24.50 713 F $2.50 214 F $75 328 F $21 920 FVF $5.25 (VF price) 921 FVF $4.5 (VF price) [Edited to change 411 to 413 and adjust total] |

Big oooops on my part I put the 620 as 184 (a184 picture reference# in catalog)as well as 713 as a219 same mistake. Think the 214 is a bit better than F but thank you for catching the screw ups and getting my head back on straight. Now for the color on the 398? Can't find my wonder color gauge and its not all that good anyway so here is a scan with a known Canadian Carmine pair that I also compared to about 30 other mnh copies I had beside them. Now I have no idea what Carmine "Lake" would be from a shade stand point but I would say there is a difference at least in the scan . Of course colors on scans will vary so this is to show nothing other than subtle shade difference. |

For whatever it's worth, entering the binder title into a web search came up with this ad for First National Investors who had a subscription service in the 1970's for people interested in "investing" in rare stamps and apparently at several levels of quantity/quality. In all fairness, I've never heard of the process before, but I suspect it was an overpriced "investment" given the type of magazine ad presentation. I wonder if it came with a "certificate of authenticity"?: http://books.google.com/books?id=Gj...ge&q&f=falseNo doubt the stamps have some value, but as with many of these sort of "investments" I suspect the purchaser paid a whole lot more for the "investment" up-front than you will realize in selling them on the secondary market. |

Quote: Think the 214 is a bit better than F ... Now for the color on the 398? I typically call the grade conservatively so I won't end up bidding more for something than I should. An FVF 214 catalogs at $125. As for color, I'm the last person you want to ask! I went to the Philatelic Foundation's database and pulled an example of the 398 (carmine), 398a (carmine lake) and 398b (lake) so you can try to compare apples to apples (while recognizing scanning variance) -- they are shown below in the listed order. Hope it helps. Steve |

WT you are correct again as always. The reverse of the parchment is the certificate of authenticity for each issue. The collection this was included with was from a well organized in depth philatist but as these were dated 1976 he may not have been as seasoned as he ended up being. However I do recall the daughter mentioning he bought every coin set he could get his hands on so he may have been victim to good yet somewhat misleading advertisements. |

Thanks Steve that definatly helps to say mine is definatly not Lake or shade there of but still seems rather washed out for carmine. Then again could Canadian (Unitrade)Carmine and Scotts Carmine be different to a degree or two? I'm not good with shades or grades myself so I'll leave it at the lesser . |

The Philatelic Foundation database has really helped me when trying to determine grades of various U.S. issues as well as color. If you haven't used the database before you can find it at http://pfsearch.org/pfsearch/ |
