hi guys just reading posts and lots of people showing off there collections so here goes, sorry pics are not great, just got this collection was in the shead when I was clearing out must have belonged to my dad never knew he had it, so here are just a few pics for now,still hundreds to go through.

just didn't get round to doing anthing with it so far it's as I found it all in bags and that's just the tip of the iceberg. lol

thank you jeff and dave, glad to hear I have some interesting stamps and not all rubbish ones, i'm new to this so i'll need to do lots of reserch and learn how to de-paper. =) gerry.

Many people run across "closet collectors" in their family. Glad you decided to bring your inherited collection to light. Ask anything, someone should have an answer or point you in the right direction. Welcome!

Hello gerry88, welcome!

De-papering (or soaking off or floating) is easy but sometimes the stamp remaining on the piece of paper with the cancellation or postmark makes it more interesting and sometimes more worthwhile to have or more valuable. (This is from a fellow who enjoys cancels ). Sometimes older stamps are kept on paper by collectors of the time to avoid damaging the stamp, but can hide faults in the paper or repairs even.

And just because some of your stamps are damaged or not perfect doesn't make them garbage. You can keep them because you couldn't afford a really nice copy , the colour is different than others, the perforations around the edges are different than others, the paper is different, the cancel is different, there are re-entries or printing flaws or errors on that stamp, etc, etc. (This is from a philatelist or guy who likes to study stamps as well as enjoy them ).

On your first scan, what is that light-blue lady on the stamp with the 20 inside the star-like cancel? What country is it from? What are the words are the edge? I can't make it out. Haven't seen that stamp with that cancel before and I am intrigued. Thanks for posting that.

Oh, another similar cancel on the Queen Victoria in the second photo at bottom left. Is that South Australia?

in answer to your fist question the stamp has new south wales postage 2 1/2 pence written on it and post mark is 25 not 20 in star. no 2 is also a new south wales 2d stamp with what I think is 30 in star post mark. hope this helps you. gerry

I am interested in star cancellations and did not know, but now do, that NSW had them.

glad to help, I don't know if this stamp collecting is for me. at the moment it seems very much over my head and a lot to take in. just hope it get easier. lol

Just do the parts that you like and ignore the rest. It grows on you when you start reading on Stamp Community though, fair warning. I had just decided to collect one type of stamp (after collecting worldwide for many years and then leaving it completely) so as not to get 'drawn in' again. lol It was no use. I am a collector / accumulator.

A little bit here, a little bit there and all of a sudden you have a collection and are 'an expert'.


An art-minded person would like things that appealed to their sense of good taste but a railroad person would just like the railroad related stamps. You might just like odd-shaped (non-rectangular or square) stamps. Or Kings and Queens. Or paintings. Or the history of a certain country or region or era or just what strikes you as interesting in the moment.

It all counts as enjoying stamp collecting.

Whether you just like good looking stamps (to your own sense of eye appeal) or you want to have the biggest stamp collection in the whole world it is all good.
