Picked up a sheet of Mark Twain stamps today:

Although I'm no English major, I found it a bit curious that for a person who has been dead for more than a century, in the text on the reverse side of the sheet the USPS refers to Mark Twain in the present tense rather than the past tense as in "Mark Twain is the author..." rather than "Mark Twain was the author..."

Also, I'll concede that this one may be correct, but I also found it interesting that they refer to Twain's work "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" rather than "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn". I've checked the internet on that one, and it seems that depending on which edition you refer to, some of the books begin with "The" and others do not.

I know this may be "nitpicking", but I just wonder how the USPS handles proofreading these biographies before they are submitted as final copy.

Reminds me of the Cornelius Krieghoff stamp issued by
Canada in 1972 honouring the Dutch (father German) painter.

On the stamp is was correct Krieghoff but on the
imprint in the margin of the 4 corners it was spelled
Kreighoff.

Something in the English language about e before i, except....
which obviously isn't the rule in German.

Hi lithograving

It is actually

i before e, except after c, but there are some exceptions.

I find it even more interesting that the biography provides the years of birth and death for the pseudonym "Mark Twain" as 1835 and 1910, respectively, even though Samuel Clemens didn't begin his writing career until 1847 and didn't adopt the pen name Mark Twain until 1863.

Another interesting piece of trivia, per Wiki, the town where Mark Twain was born has a 2010 population of ZERO!

Quote:
Florida is a village in Monroe County, Missouri, United States, best known as the birthplace of writer Mark Twain on November 30, 1835. Twain described Florida, his birthplace as a "nearly invisible village". While its maxiumum population reached 280 in 1880, it has steadily declined in its residents. The population was 9 at the 2000 census and 0 at the 2010 census.

PS Thanks for the meaning of the cry "Mark Twain"...fascinating.

From my little cabin in the country
..and a cacophany of sound from a family of Kookaburras
it is the most magical bird sound one can hear.

To another cabin in 1948

The "laughing Kookaburra"
older Australian collectors may recall this sound
as a precursore to the latest black/white "Movietone News"
at cinemas. During and after the WW2.

The envelope, too?

I wonder what other poster stamps the "International Poster Stamp Assn." of San Francisco produced? I cannot find very much info. about them.

Also found their warning interesting: "DO NOT AFFIX THESE STAMPS ON THE FRONT OF ENVELOPES."
