Gerry, the Irish cancellation for this period is a diamond with horizontal bars and in the centre rectangular space is a number designating the place where the obliterator was applied. For example, the first stamp on the second row displays "289" which is the number for Kingstown. The next stamp appears to have "335" which is the designator for Monasterevan.
thank you mhc99, i'm from ireland so I know monasterevan well it's not that far from me but never heard of kingstown, i'll have to look that one up, thank you again. gerry
Gerry, my book shows "289" as Kingstown (Dub.). I believe that "Dub." stands for the county Dublin. This number is from a list of towns during the period of 1844 - 1857 and perhaps the town has had a name change or is a ghost town. I tried googling Kingston, Ireland and couldn't find it.
thank you jeff. i could not find kingstown either and i'm orignally from dublin and never heard of it, but i'll keep trying because it's so strange thank you mhc99
