Not necessarily.

Are you talking about US or foreign stamps? Are you specifically referring to the Scott Catalog or other catalogs that specialize in certain parts of the world?

Oftentimes stamps can be listed in strange places within the catalog. There are also certain countries that have intentionally been omitted from catalog listings either because of the questionable printing of stamps by unauthorized parties or the over-printing of stamps for philatelic purposes only (i.e. to sell to stamp collectors at a profit, meaning they were never intended for use as postage on a country's mail and have been rejected by the authors of the catalog as a legitimate issue.)

There are also intentional forgeries that exist and/or color or perforation oddities that were man-made to deceive an unknowing collector and not as they were originally printed by the postal authority.

Finally, there are poster stamps or "cinderellas" that were printed to look like stamps, but have no denomination indicated and were made by private entities, typically as a fund raising effort (i.e. Christmas Seals, Easter Seals, etc.) or to be given or sold at a major event (i.e. World's Fairs, Expos, etc.).

As you can see there are a number of possible answers to your question. The best thing for you to do would be to either describe (or better yet scan) a stamp you have a question on and let someone on this forum help identify it for you.

I hope this helps answer your question ... and by the way, welcome to Stamp Collecting Forum!

The struggle to get images posted is a great learning process, so don't give up. When all else fails describe in words exactly what you are doing (scanning?, taking photos?, using GIMP? and others will help.
