I've just bought my first large batch of KGV stamps and went over a few this evening with a magnifying glass. I'm mostly looking for nice SON cancels, but this error caught my attention - the 'A' in 'HALFPENCE' looks rather more like an upside down 'V' (i.e., the hatch across the middle of the 'A' is missing). (There's also a bulge at the end of the first 'E.')

I'm wondering if this is a listed error.

Detail:

Thanks for looking!

Jimjamtwo, I checked approx. one dozen of these stamps in my collection and noted one which is also missing most of the horizontal line in the middle of the "A" (see below).

OK off to check mine!
Out of 6, the only one that came close is this one.

Jimjamtwo and Mhc99

The crossbar on A is a tricky one the rare plate 1A has about 6 examples of missing crossbar and partial crossbar
they exist in the other 4 plates as well.
I have quite a few and they have me stumped plate 1A Perf 14 only lasted for about 12 weeks between September and December 1926 and had to be replaced.

Thanks for the responses, everyone.

Aussie Al, what is the source of your information? How would I be able to tell if I have a 'rare place' or not? I have over 400 of these things now and, as I said, I bought the lot mainly for the SON cancels, but now I realise I should probably also check them for plate errors. Perhaps if you have a source of information about this subject, you could post it?

I'm also pretty sure there is an excellent website on the KGV issues, one that goes in great detail about the various issues, including colour varieties and plate errors, but I haven't been able to find it again. Does anyone know what it is?

These kind of books are ridiculously overpriced and are well outside the price range of most collectors, at least, collectors who do not intend to narrow their collecting to a single issue!

I don't understand why they don't turn the book into a CD and sell it for $14.95 or so. They'd sell a great many more that way!
