I came across this "mini-collection" earlier this evening while going through a box of material my father gave me.

With this morning's end of the space shuttle program upon the return of Atlantis to Kennedy Space Center, I thought it fitting to share these stamps and ask others to post images of stamps depicting the shuttle program.

SPACE SHUTTLE MISSION STS-107

Space Shuttle Colombia launched into space on January 16th, 2003 on what was to prove an ill-fated mission.

On board was the first ever Israeli in Space, Payload Specialist Ilan Ramon.

Upon re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere on February 1st, the Colombia disintegrated and all seven crew members were lost. The tragic accident was caused by damage to the wing upon take-off from the Kennedy Space Centre.

Ramon became an instant hero in Israel and it seemed like the whole nation was in mourning.
Israel post did not issue a commemorative stamp until one year after the tragedy, on Feb 24th 2004. But it still proved to be a hugely popular issue with both collectors and non-collectors alike.

The stamp was issued in a sheetlet of 10. The Tab shows the Mission Insignia which was designed by two of the crew members, but without the names or the Israel Flag. A picture of the Colombia Space shuttle appears in the sheetlet borders along with images of the US and Israel Flags.

Long may they all be remembered.

Michael,

A tremendous loss, as was the loss of the Challenger crew.

Quote:
The first Space Shuttle Disaster was Challenger which was lost during an explosion as it took off from Cape Canaveral on January 28, 1986, killing all seven people on board. NASA suspended shuttle flights for two years.

The Space Shuttle Challenger Mission (Flight STS-51L) was the 25th Space Shuttle mission and the 10th launch of the Space Shuttle Challenger.

It was launched from Pad 39B at Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 11:38am EST. This mission was highly publicized because it was the first time a school teacher was allowed to travel in space. Christa McAuliffe, a high school teacher from New Hampshire was to be the the first civilian in space. She was selected from more than 11,000 applicants.

The crew of Space Shuttle Challenger consisted of 7 astronauts:

- Francis R. Scobee - Mission Commander
- Michael J. Smith - Pilot
- Gregory B. Jarvis - Payload Specialist 1
- Christa McAuliffe - Payload Specialist 2
- Judith A. Resnik - Mission Specialist 1
- Ellison S. Onizuka - Mission Specialist 2
- Ronald E. McNair - Mission Specialist 3

This item of philatelic space memorabilia was produced relatively early in the shuttle program. This cover was flown aboard Challenger on the eighth space shuttle flight.
