Just noticed a new type of cancel on some Germany stamps. The cancel ink is very evenly distributed and the machine hits the surface hard enough to reverse emboss the stamp (which doesn't show up on the scan unfortunately).
Anyone else noticed them? Or know how the devices operate?

The example below is also of interest because it appears to have gotten involved in some sort of "time warp".

That's some nice cancel!

It's a shame they can't spray it on with an inkjet printer, then smear it all over the face of the stamp

Hi All

My understanding of this particular cancellation is that it was used in some of the distribution offices within Germany to cancel mail from various locations in the country that neglected (or failed) to cancel the stamp from the post office of origin.

In other words, some of these "Central Post Offices" were issued these cancelling devices to cancel mail that should have been cancelled from another post office that it was originally sent from.

I also think, though not certain, that the reason for no specific date on the cancelling device was simply because there was no way of knowing when a cover was originally sent (processed) in the mail from any given post office of origin.

I have seen some of these on stamps dating back at least 10 to 15 years.

Hope this helps

I tend to agree with Ryan when he noted on the previous thread
https://goscf.com/t/12350
that entgelt bezahlt simply means postage paid.

These undated cancellations are often applied to bulk (junk) mail sendings and delivered to the Briefzentren prepaid/ pre-stamped.
