This cover arrived in the post for me this morning :

I have never really got into postal history but would like to add covers to my Union of South Africa collection.

The international postal rate for this period 1919 - 2 1/2d for the first 1/2 oz and then from 1920 it was 2 1/2d for the first 1 oz.

Why was there a 12c postage due charged? Was 1/2d worth 12c in 1920? I take it that there are two separate stamps for the due because they only had the make up values rather than every value.

Any help for this novice cover collector

Could this have been affixed to something larger? What is your theory about the partial cds rings at top left?

It's eye-catching. Nice stamps, and lots of markings.

C.

(an unhelpful assessment from someone who doesn't spend much time with covers, either)

I also noticed the partial cds at the top. it seems the cds and the 2c due were possibly on a roller - they match up with the bottom two. The cover is in its entirety and has not been on anything else.

Thanks for the input Cjd

I would expect the T 10c marking to have been applied in South Africa, and the '10c' to be Gold Centimes, which - presumably - converted to $US0.02.

Thanks Tony,

That makes more cents (sense) now. I found this site which explains it a little further - http://postalhistorycorner.blogspot...anadian.html

Great postcard, thank you for the upload.

The postcard rate to foreign destinations (Excluding Commonwealth) from South Africa in 1930 was 1 1/2d.
