The worse part is the letter is dated the day AFTER the demotion took effect. When he got the letter he had already been replace, and didn't even know it!

Since it's dated after it occurred then it's not really addressed properly (should read Substitute Carrier). In today's world he probably could have contested it in court and got a hefty payout. Back then, he probably just jumped off a building, poor bugger!
