Hi Everyone,
I found a bunch of odd stuff in a bag of stamps I have.
I'll upload them separately so you can take a look at the photos and please let me know what you think.

This stamp that has the word SNUFF on it, is very unusual, well it is to me, LOLOL...

If anyone can help me with the following:
What does "snuff" mean on the stamp? I thought snuff was to kill or die or something like that, but guessing it has many different meanings.

What does it have 5/8 ounce on it? 5/8 ounces of what?

What is on the stamps, is it a flower?

What does the Internal Revenue people have to do with stamps? I have several that have that on them too.

Also, any other additional information, Scott #, history, why is it blue, etc would be so greatly apprciated.

Here is the "stamp" (I guess it's a stamp) in question. I will be uploading / starting new threads with more stuff I found soon.
Thank you and have a great day!

SueStamps, I found the following link which talks about "Snuff" revenue stamps (See paragraph 8 and click on "this illustration" to see your stamp).
http://www.rdhinstl.com/taxpaid.htm

By the way, snuff is a nicotine containing product made of ground or pulverised tobacco leaves.

Looks like Wadmalatz is much quicker finding the link than me.

Snuff is basically a kind of powdered tobacco. You take a pinch and inhale (or 'snuff') through the nose. It usually induces a sneeze.

Snuff boxes are a collectable in their own right.

As they say, now your in my neck of the woods.
As stated before, Snuff is Tobbacco leaves that have been ground into a very fine powder and inhaled through the nose. This is an example of a Tax stamp for a 5/8 ounce Tin of Snuff. The series number is a coded date, 112 was used in 1942. They are not listed in Scott's. Value is around $5.00

I grow tobacco as I am a tobacco farmer amongst other things (Corn, soybeans & wheat). It is very much a nicotine product. "Snuff" is probably referring to the old style of ingesting tobacco. I don't know if some you older folk remember products like Dr. Magillicutty's sniff-n-snuff. Basically a dried and pulverized into a powder and insnuffilated (up the nasal passages), also the word has a sort of a "slang-ish" use meaning chewing tobacco. Hope this helps some.

I know that in terms of value, this is worth next to nil because of its damage and the fact that someone cut the sides. Nevertheless, it is noted as a Series 105 and I've always been curious as to what year this example would have seen use. Any ideas?

Thanks.

Most of the small sized Snuff stamps are clipped on the sides. It does not affect the value by very much.

We're also now in my neck of the woods, as I'm a snuff-taker. Others are correct: it's powdered tobacco that is sniffed to deliver nicotine through the nasal membranes. Like most things in life, the complexity of the subject can be astonishing to the newcomer -- try http://mrsnuff.com to see a selection of what's available today.
