I also went through the wondering on the colors of this issue. I have 5-6 copies and each varies from light thru dark but but not the Lake I was hoping for. Yours is a very dark Carmine at the least but the color Lake has been discussed in depth and more than just the shade it is a different pigment that it derives it color from. I'm no expert but I would say your top stamp is deep or dark carmine.
I believe if you do a search on the color Lake through here you will find a few topics and discussions that are helpful.

Although upon examining your 1st stamp it does almost appear Lake but I too would have to err on Deep carmine. Lake is unmistakeable once you correctly identify it. I has a look unlike almost anything else. Here is a link that may help: Click on the 2 cent parcel post

I have been racking my brain (not painful though it sounds like it should be) trying to think of a stamp whose primary, and hopefully, only color is lake. If so it would be a nice stamp to get to make the comparisons.

Does anyone know of such a stamp? Oh and let's add another thing as long as we are hoping---inexpensive.

Hi to all

I would call this one lake, the scan does not show the brightness of the red.
