Australian Stamp-Coin
An Australian coin shaped as a postage stamp has been created to commemorate the Beijing Olympic Games.

Produced by the Perth Mint, one side of the 50 cent "stamp-coin" features the mythical Chinese dragon and the Australian Olympic Committee logo.

The other side reproduces the usual image of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Only 8,000 of the coins will be released across the country in a tribute to the Chinese belief in the lucky number eight, Australia Post said

I'm surprised they aren't being produced by the Franklin Mint and being shipped in a "Handsome faux-wood, felt lined display case with an individually numbered certificate of authenticity. Strict limit of three per household. Only $79.99 plus S&H each. But wait! If you order in the next ten minutes we'll double your order. Just pay the additional S&H"

Those sound very interesting. I would like to find out how to get ahold of some myself.

I just got my brochure from the Perth Mint yesterday.
Most of the coins are over priced in my opinion, but I did like this one.
It's sold out already.

I would have thought that 888,000 would have been a better number but then the value would be a lot less maybe, to collectors anyway.

Does everyone know, that is why the Olympics is starting on 08/08/08?
Because Chinese love the number 8.

I didn't specifically know that Trigger, but it is interesting. I was selling a house in Virginia one time and a Chinese couple were thinking about buying. They had some sort of device they put on the garage door to check if the house faced in one of the "good" directions. It didn't and they didn't buy. It's funny how the Chinese can meld a thousand year old tradition of what we call superstition with an extremely modern and technological society.
