Found this dated precancel and thought I'd post it. I believe it's a Type 548 from Elmira, NY and the initials seem to indicate "RRI" and I believe the date to be September 1941.

Anyone have any input on what company may have used this precancel? Both the initials and date seem to be 2.5mm high.

[Edit] Forgot to post the image. Here it is:

WT1 RRI = Remington-Rand, Inc. Style C-13 used from 1940-43.
Earlier style C-4, used between 1938-39.

Remington-Rand made typewriters. I learned on one!

Great info. Thanks. I remember Remington-Rand, too. They made mechanical adding machines, too. (before the advent of today's calculators.)

I happened to come across the above previously scanned stamp in my album and so I looked up this old thread as I have another question.

I indicated in my initial post that I thought this was a Type 548 precancel, but in just checking the PSS types, it seems that Type 548 had a distance of 10mm between bars whereas the above example has a full 13mm distance between bars. I also note that the measurements are qualified by the note that some variance may exist due to the type of precanceling device used.

Can anyone confirm if this is indeed a Type 548 precancel with 13mm spacing between bars? The length of the letters and the distance between city and state do fit the Type 548 definition...just not the distance between bars.

Thanks.
