This was just published in a Florida newspaper today (10/11/2011).

Quote:
Some postal customers are receiving bogus emails about an attempted delivery of either a package or letter. The emails contain a link that, when opened, installs a malicious virus that can steal personal information from your PC.

The emails claim to be from the U.S. Postal Service and contain fraudulent information about an attempted or intercepted delivery. You are instructed to click on a link to find out when you can expect your delivery or to arrange for redelivery. But Postal Inspectors warn: Do not click on the link!

I don't know how regionalized or widespread it may be, so I thought I'd share it as an advanced warning should anyone receive such an e-mail communication.

Here's the newspaper link should anyone wish to read further about it:

Thanks for the heads up, wt1!

In general, NEVER EVER click on any link in any email you receive -- even those from email addresses you recognize (possibly even your buddies' emails). Email accounts and computers get hijacked all the time. They will even send you an email from your friend, and address you by your proper name (pilfered from examining the emails of the account they hijacked).

Instead of clicking on links in an email, always examine the actual URL of the link (use right-click and select that option). You should be able to tell right away if the link is legit or not. Even if it looks legit, I would suggest that you copy the link URL and paste it into your browser, rather than directly clicking on the link. There are ways to mask things so it looks like you are clicking on the link or a pop-up window, but are actually clicking to approve something else far more sinister. You can make the link or pop-up window say anything you want, and it may have nothing to do with the action you are actually clicking to approve.

I was just on the USPS Web Site today (11/22/2011) and they have posted an official US Postal Inspection Service Warning about this very thing:
