Welcome to Stamp Community Forum, Jo10Jo!

Scott US #194 was printed on soft porous paper. The way to identify soft porous paper has previously discussed in the following thread regarding #193:

Thank you khj, The reason I ask is that I have a used 3 cent bank note on a postal cover, and I noticed a slight difference when comparing it to the scott #184,it is has a darker portriat background, and it has the blueish green color like the scott #207.Allso when comparing it to the scott # 207,it doesn't have the short line under "ct" in cent, and the paper seems to be the same as the scott #184.Allso on this stamp I notice the shadow on the right side of the oval frame is thicker than both the scott #184,and # 207.Are any of these characteristics found in the #194? Thank you.

Jo10Jo, welcome to SCF. The 1880 American special printings is one of the areas in U.S. philately that illustrates what we don't know.

What we do know is that they were not gummed and no used copies are known. Many sources list the number of examples at 20, but only 14 copies have been certified. These special printings were printed of the regular paper used for the normal American Bank Note issues of the time and on the same plates used for regular production. The ink color was reported as a shade that differed from the production stamps and was reported as having a more bluish tint.

I have found no definitive method to conclusively differentiate between the 184 blue green and the 194 blue green. Some of the certified copies actually have a yellowish tint and probably would not be certified if submitted today. I believe that, unless new information about these issues is discovered, no new certifications will be issued.
