Australia : Her Best Postcard Yet Produced.

Something that I have come across in Australian stamping and posting material lately is how much the people in charge of making this stuff like to push environmental issues.
An SCF member mentioned the other day that the US and UK have not issued an anti-smoking stamp while basically every other country has.
A very interesting area for a topical possibly.

Interesting topic on that beautiful card. I just had big arguement over recycling where I live. I'm all for it but in Ontario they issue you a blue and red box and everyone happily sorts and washes there refuse. Then biweekly the Big blue truck picks them up and voila the province has capatilized again. Other provinces and most states all offer a refund center for almost all recyclable material and they have been doing this for years. Locally it has almost become a crime to not freely donate these ever more valuable items and please don't forget to rinse everything. I think the only place that charges as well as offers a refund for bottles and cans is the good ole BEER STORE. Oh and that is also run by the province and it is illegal to purchase alchohol from any place but them. Whats it called when government becomes the Monopoly ?

The government lost out down here in Nova Scotia as they set up return depots where we could get out money back on soda pop and juice containers and everyone went there and got their money back. The government didn't expect so many to do that.

I have read that it costs more to recycle all the plastic and stuff than the government is getting back for it. May be a rumour of course.


The throw it away society comes from the gotta have it now and use it now thinking I think. Not much forward thinking going on all around.

Your probably correct that in the hands of Gov't it loses money but to open it up privatly it would be profitable. There are 1-2 local big recyclers that accept aluminum cans provided they are all crushed but at least its something. Funny as a kid I used to go door to door collecting pop bottles for extra money. The only forward thinking I see out of Ontario is how to jack the hydro up 60 % with smart meters. Bet they loose money on that when all is said and done.
Rod how is recycling handled is Aus now is it refunds or gov't pick ups?

Where we live is on an island in the middle of a Marine Park. It is the largest Morton Bay island being about 10kms long and 3kms wide. Our landfill rubbish tip was changed into a recycle station some 10 years ago.The green waste is all turned into wood chip. Car bodies and other steel things are taken to the steel making place. Car batteries are recycled. Glass is collected and sent be reused. Plastics are collected and reused. Dangerous toxic things have a place to go as well. The recycle station also has a car trailer that we can use for free.
For this recycle station we pay nothing and get no refund on any thing as well. It seems very fair to us.

On top of this we have 3 rubbish bins in different colours. One bin for recycled goods. One for green waste and one for the stinking rotting stuff. All this rubbish goes to a huge recycle station on the mainland. That is how it works in our backyard.

It is very nice to hear from other brothers and sisters that
share the planet in a caring way.
Australia has a weekly pick up (green "wheelie bin" for general dump waste)
and every two weeks picks up the yellow bin
(recyclable material)

As a cyclist, one sees probably more rubbish on country roads.
Around my lovely town, it is a disgrace
around about 2-5 km out of town is the "toss stretch"
where those leaving just hurl the stuff out the window.

The rubbish generally reflects the previous owners
that is, empty alchohol bottles, fast food containers
and paper nappies.

In Melbourne Victoria we could do with some draconian laws.

The streets are always littered with cigarette buts. People thrown there used fast food containers in the gutters.You just have to go down King Street in Melbourne on Sunday mornings to see all the litter left from the "Disco Persons" But the council does not seem to care. They put up "butt out bins" for cigarettes,but I have seen persons huddled around them in groups and still throw their cigarettes on the ground. It is too dangerous to say anything as in Melbourne you are liable to get punched in the face. I have seen council officers turn a blind eye as well.

Thanks for sharing. Here in new Brunswick we are a little behing the times. We do recycle to some extent but it could be a lot better. As for myself, I do all I can; recycle, compost, take donate unwanted items such as clothes and household goods to charities. I also make a consious effort to buy items with the least amount of packaging and because we don't eat processed or packaged food, for the most part, we have very little garbage at the end of the week.
