Greetings From Toronto's Suburbs!

Hi,

So last spring my daughter's 5th grade teacher started a 'mandatory' stamp club for her class. 6 months later I can't believe what fun I'm having or even why.

I love the art, history and politics that get wrapped up in stamps. We're mostly putting together some topical pages and are interested in a few speciifc countries (Canada of course and some other faves), and when I was going through some of my late mother's things I discovered to my surprise that my grandmother had a bit of a stamp collection that had made its way to me.

We've joined a club (other than the Gr.5/6 club) , overpsent on some albums, tongs, etc, bought in from an online auction and are looking forward to our first "bourse" ?? event towards the end of November.

So much to learn for a newbie's newbie - I've been very impressed by the quality of the discussion on many of the threads I've seen so far I am looking forward to corresponding with the community to help me learn.

The term is usually associated with stock trading, but has been adopted by the philatelic and Numismatic communities to describe a stamp or currency trade fair. It will be a great way to meet local collectors. Just be prepared for a big age difference (This assumption is based on the fact you have a 5th grader. Most clubs are populated by retirees)

We're already excited to help average down the age at our local stmap club. So the bourse is even more promising. We've met great characters so far and my daughter is an absolute star in the club.

what a great story! There are quite a few of us with young children, and some members who are involved with running junior stamp clubs, and with Scout stamp collecting badges and suchlike, so I'm sure you'll find lots of common ground with them. Not to mention of course the information, discussion and generally friendy and sociable nature of SCF.

That's cool thing about the mandatory stamp club in the lower grades. Great idea. A great container and purveyor of information are stamps to young and old alike.

Thanks all for the warm welcome - I keep finding such fantastic threads to read through and I remain truly amazed at the quality of the contributions and materials that the members have available. I'm really enjoying reading through. I'm going to try and spend some time in the general stamp collecting forum because my priority right now is to try and muster some focus as right now everytime I see something interesting I want it and this is leading to a lot of cost and not much by way of organization.

Hi Josh. A belated welcome, just saw this post. I know we've already 'conversed' on other threads.
I'm north of Toronto, but lived downtown for many years.
There are several stamp clubs in the city, and the North Toronto club holds a regular bourse in a church up Yonge St.
There's also regular show near Edwards Gardens, but I seem to have lost that info in the vortex that is my studio. If I find it I'll post it to you.
