This pair of 807s is canceled with a duplex which is different than others I've seen. Usually, the right part of the duplex has a number inside the "football". In this case, as you can see in the image, it has the word "CHURCH". Putting 2 and 2 together -- looking at the "YORK, NY" and "STREET STA" on the left side -- I think this is a cancel from the Church Street Station post office.

Why is the football different in this particular cancel? Is it common to have a "football" with something other than a number or is this somehow unique?

There are several duplex cancels with text in the killer. RMS for Railway Mail Service, Air Mail, APO numbers, GPO, and several post office branches.

I have heard those duplex "footballs" called heel prints or foot steps or somesuch thing awhile back. Never seen a duplex with a word in that though. neat!

Thanks for the pics, guys! Very cool to see other similar cancels. In retrospect, I do recall the "RMS" cancel. I wonder why Oahu and the Church Street Station had their name in the cancel? Interesting none the less.

Anyway, I like this canceled pair. Reasonable examples of this common issue with an interesting postmark. Thinking about postage at the time, this must have been on a heaver letter as the 1 ounce postage was 3 cents in 1947.

Hopefully I don't "offend" anyone by posting this issue on the "Classic" board. No doubt, there are members who were alive and kicking when this issue was printed!

I can't provide an answer, and don't know much about the Oahu, Hawaii cancel, but as far as New York City is concerned, several of the post office "stations" had their name in the duplex cancel. Here are two other examples I pulled off the web:

Madison Square Station:

Times Square Station:

If I were to guess, I would say that due to the high number of postal "stations" in New York City, it was far faster and more efficient for clerks to recognize the station name in the "football" section of the cancel than to read it within the circular postmark.
