Hi Everyone!
I am looking through about 200 #720-? A226 Washington's, and was curios if there is anything in particular out there to look for? I Have a couple with air mail cancels... but don't see anything with large gutters. The last one has a guide line on bottom.

Any ideas would be great!

The ones in your picture look like they are from sheets. If you have some that are from a coil (imperf on top and bottom) you might find what is called a line pair, or a plate number strip. While not particularly more valuable, they offer something extra to look out for, and are a little more valuable than stamps from the sheet.

No Stamps are worthless, especially ones on piece with a postmark.

This could be the most valuable SC720. This is the only precancel ever found from Ontario Iowa - value: 1000$+ This precancel plate had 25 subjects so 24 more of these are out there someplace.

Just checked my Iowa precancels ... no luck!

But I just looked up Ontario, Iowa and the town is no more. It's population dwindled to less than 125 and was annexed to Ames, Iowa in 1962.

The Ontario, Iowa post office closed in 1951, but this web site gives an interesting account of it:

I have a hundred or so, so I thought it might be fun to flyspeck it. Any good sites with illustrations?
Here is a quote from the 1847usa web site:
"This issue is a favorite of the so-called "flyspeck" philatelists, the number of shifts, transfers and recuts is that great. There are collectible varieties with gripper cracks, horizontal and vertical gutters, as well as horizontally imperforate vertical pairs. Shade varieties run from a reddish violet in the earlier printings to a bluish violet in the later printings. Being a regularly issued stamp, this stamp was also issued in coil and booklet form."

EDIT: Hmmm.. this is getting really tedious. Any flyspeckers here who would like to take them off my hands? If so send me an address.
