I have always been fascinated with the life and times of M/G George A. Custer. I have an extensive library on him and have had the privilege of holding some of his personal artifacts. This cover was given to me many years ago due to my interest. It came with an accompanying card detailing a brief history.

Greg

Custer the clueless...my 45/70 single shot cavalry carbine is excellent for braining someone..but if I had to try and hit a moving target like an indian on a horse I would be in big trouble !!

Intersting that Garryowen is a privately-owned town -- and the only town within the Battlefield. Here's a link with a brief history, including the lyrics of the marching song "Garry Owen":

philb,

clueless might be a bit rash,... arrogant, audacious, reckless, fearless, I'd agree. Old George saved the day for the Union at Gettysburg. He personally led four regiments of Michigan cavalry and thwarted Jeb Stuart's whole cavalry corps east of the main battlefield. Had Stuart flanked the Union lines, they would have been whistling Dixie in the streets of D.C. He was no saint, by any means, but he also got hung out to dry by two of his jealous and drunk company commanders that fateful day. Regardless of what one thinks of G.A.C., it is an interesting area of study.

Odd combo of a Custer cache and the Boy Scouts of America. Is this a suggestion that General C. could have chosen his.....scouts, better?

Note that the cachet on the scanned cover above was sponssored by the [Boy Scouts of America] Explorer Post 12 in Urbana, Illinois, thus the reason for the Boy Scout stamp appearing on the cover.
