Won this last week and just received it. Been aching for one for ages, but could not afford it. This one went fairly cheap.
I do love this series, and this one especially I love the round design in the white square.
Not the best of centerings, but it does have a fancy cancel that doesn't obscure Ben's face.

How did you beat me to that one?!? I've been trying to corner the market, but you ruined my plans!

On a serious note, great purchase. These are difficult to find sound and with a face-free cancellation. Centering is notoriously bad on these issues, so don't worry about only having VG centering. You did well!

Very nice addition James, I too am drawn for some reason to the oval design set against the cream squared background.

Be sure to check the grill closely. The 1869 issues have the highest occurance of both split and double grills.

What are split or double grills?
Looking at the back with a loupe, I can only make out a grill on the top half of the stamp. It seems to bleed off the top.
Is that bad?

let's see if these show up:
split grill (this is a quad - split in both directions)

and double grill

It's not bad if the grill bleeds off the edge of the stamp. It's better if the next one bleeds in from the other side (that's the split - you have pieces of 2 grill impressions because the grill was applied off-center and split by the perforations). The double has two different grill impressions on the same stamp)

These are on 3c copies, but all the backs look alike.
