The Postmaster Of New Salem Illinois

I received the August American Philatelist today and the stories are pretty interesting for a change...theres a one page article on Abraham Lincoln with a 1933 cover..the 100th anniversary of Lincoln being commissioned the postmaster of New Salem Ill..At some point I will make a xerox copy and send it to stamperdude..i doubt I can copy the whole page article on my scanner !!

No need to copy it. I am an APS member and just read the article Friday. I even have an example of the New Salem cover shown. With a couple exceptions mine does not have the letter from the article, the verbage below the cachet about being carried down the Lincoln Trail to Springfield, or a signature of a Boy Scout carrying the cover. It must have been requested by a collector & mailed back to him. I also have an example of the cover for the Grand Army of the Republic "G.A.R." encampment in Springfield IL, which would have taken place at Camp Butler east of Springfield. It was a civil war era encampment, which is now a national military cemetary.

Its better than very nice...super topical cover collection..what a shame you do not have a local stamp group where you could make up an exhibit..you would just have to do a little write up for each cover and mount them !!

I like your world fair cover. There was one I saw for the Lincoln exhibit at the 1933 Century of Progress Fair, but I don't have it or one like yours either. Also, I do belong to a stamp club, Springfield Philatelic Society. We put out an annual cachet cover with a Lincoln theme for our Fall Stamp Bourse in October. This years will commemorate Lincoln's House Divided Speech. We are also putting out one for Lincoln's birthday next year, possibly a set of 3. I have never put together an exhibit before, but I have thought about doing one.

Stamperdude I am going to the APS show in Hartford in a couple of weeks..if you trust my judgement I can keep an eye peeled for decent lincolns for you..should be able to find something decent in a dollar box...phil

I love dollar boxes. I think my next stamp show won't be until October for my clubs Annual Fall Bourse in Springfield.

Tom, Thanks for the covers. Nice touch using only Lincoln stamps on the outer envelope. It's always nice to get mail from another stamp collector.
