unusual #155 buff on India paper but gummed? So I see this beautiful #115 color trial proof on India and it's a bit wrinkled..."OK" I thought, "I'll check it out" because I know these India/china paper wrinkles up pretty bad when wet so I notice that on the back it looks to have been gummed!? Now did someone "re-gum" a proof or was they ever known to have hum to begin with...which my better judgement says NO! Your thoughts?

It's listed as an UNITED STATES 1869 Scott# 115-E1c Buff Essay Stamp.

ILS, I don't know what percentage of essays were gummed, but it is quite common.

This one is not a trial color proof, it is an essay (proofs were the final design submitted for approval, an essay is a proposed design that differs in some way from the final design). You may or may not have noticed the 5c value as apposed to 6c on the final design. I think the seller got the catalogue number wrong, but the catalogue price correct (listed as 115-E1c, value $80. Actual value would be $600 if E1c). It should be a 115-E2c, "Plate Essay on wove, imperf, gummed" cat value $80.

I believe it is an authentic 115-E2c. The wrinkling is likely caused by the hinge.

Brian

I forgot to mention ... you made a mistake in your title. It should read 115, not 155 :)

That's a pretty cool looking essay. Besides the colour, the design is varied slightly, to make more interesting. I don't know what these things are 'worth' but that seems like a pretty reasonable price to me.

haha I really messed that up! Thank you Rileysan I actually did know it was an essay (from the India paper and color) but I did miss the denomination though. Thank you.
