Yet another 2012 "Forever" Stamp announced by the USPS today: Quote: One of our country's most versatile and honored actors, José Ferrer is the 14th luminary celebrated in the U.S. Postal Service's Distinguished Americans series. The stamp shows Ferrer at the height of his fame, his elegant and timeless look captured in an oil-on-canvas portrait.
Critics and peers alike lauded Ferrer as one of the most accomplished talents of his generation. Ferrer was not only a highly acclaimed actor, but also a director, writer, musician, and producer. During his long career he garnered many accolades that testified to the depth and quality of his work, including several Tony Awards for his achievements on stage. His film appearances resulted in three Academy Award nominations, including one for what is arguably his most famous role — the swashbuckling poet Cyrano de Bergerac — for which he won a Best Actor Oscar, the first for a Latino.
The original painting for the stamp art was created by Daniel Adel. Antonio Alcalá was the art director.
The José Ferrer stamp is being issued as a Forever® stamp. Forever stamps are always equal in value to the current First-Class Mail one-ounce rate.

That is one ugly stamp.
I'm surprise that the Ferrer family/estate approved of this design. |

In Laurence of Arabia he played a notorious peddarest Turkish division commander during WWI and stationed out in the middle of nowhere. Pencil thin mustache was his calling card in both that film and Cyrano, both truly great performances. |

I checked and Jose will have been dead for twenty years when the stamp comes out in 2012. However, since USPS now plans on put living persons on stamps, is that policy dead, too? Sure wouldn't mind seeing Paul Newman or Elizabeth Taylor on a stamp in the near future (but only if the images were a bit better than that Joese Ferrer stamp). By the way, Ferrer was great in the Caine Mutiny along with Bogart, Van Johnson, Fred MacMurray, and Lee Marvin. Great Movie with great actors. |

I don't like that they've changed the overall layout & design of the Distinguished American series. As you may recall, the series started in 2000 with General Stillwell And the last one (in 2009) looked like this... KirkS [edit to fix images] |

I believe this was part of the Distinguished American Series as well: Somewhat similar to the Jose Ferrer design, but rotated 90 degrees to a horizontal rather than vertical format. |

KirkS, you're absolutely right. I prefer the engraved quality of the old style much better than this new one. The Oveta Culp Hobby stamp was very boring and Jose's is no better. Additionally, does placing Ferrer in the "Distinguished American" group mean the demise of the Legends of Hollywood series? Looks like USPS is killing two reasonably popular designs with one bad one. |

I have to agree with you on the preference for the older engraved stamps. But sadly, like many other old professions, engraving is becoming a bit of a lost art. |

Not to cast any cloud over the worth of Jose Ferrer being honored with a stamp, I wonder why the USPS decided to put him in the "Distinguished Americans" series. If past history is any indication, we have had both a "Prominent Americans" and "Famous Americans" series of stamps and in virtually all cases, the honoree was distinguished either by being a writer, an educator, a philanthropist, a politician, or a military hero/patriot. I cannot recall any instance where an actor was previously put into that category. |

That is an awful design. As a side note, we just saw Jose on an old episode of "What's My Line". My mother told me that he was known as an abusive husband. That would have to be fact-checked... |

The 03/22/2012 Postal Bulletin has announced the Jose Ferrer stamp will be issued on April 26, 2012 in New York City. The print run is relatively low at 20 million stamps. Technical details follow: |
