James, I was looking through a box of stamps I got on the weekend and saw your 'Canada SC#175 1930 Harvesting Wheat.' Thanks for posting it. I would never have recognised it as a stamp which has an overprint without your post. Thanks too to fifia for this topic.

Germany - a selection from the Germania series

The 5 pfennig stamp (MI 140) overprinted to cater for increasing inflation (MI 154) and the French occupation of the Saarland (MI Saar 44)

These stamps show the German occupation of Belgium (during WWI) and the temporary separation of Bavaria from Germany in 1919.

Another example of the German occupation of Belgium and Danzig's temporary separation from Germany.

We aim to please, peter. Glad to help.

Here's another Philippines.

No overprint (web shot - I actually don't have one of these )

And with 1938 Commonwealth overprint and 1945 Commonwealth/Victory overprint.

There is another Philippines overprint that is almost the same:

The "COMMONWEALTH" overprint is slightly taller but not as long as you can see if you put the two together

Interestingly, I haven't been able to get the unoverprinted stamp either.

Charkhari State, in India, ordered a 1 Rupee (at the time, around 15 US cents) stamp in 1909:

quite unnecessarily. The basic letter rate was ˝ Anna, or one thirty-second of a rupee. Thirty years later, the remainders were still sitting around in the Charkhari Treasury, so when the need for some (more useful) 1 Anna stamps arose ...

and a closer-up

and just for variety

and close up:

(The second stamp shows the (unlisted in Gibbons) error comma for full stop after 'As'.

At least these surcharges don't seem to have been made for the collector market - they're fairly scarce.

Stamps from the Bahamas.

Please excuse the same image being posted into the Birds topic, but it kills two birds with one stone, so to speak.

An interesting twist - two overprints, and the new stamps with the overprinted sections removed. Sorry, I don't have the unoverprinted originals (and the 4c overprint is a bit creased too).

I just rescanned Turkey, so here is another installment of Turkish officials from 1951 to 1957

Slight differences in the shapes of the letters of the overprint.

Note the dot in the bottom line of the overprint, under the I on the third stamp..

First stamp has a double overprint.

Look at the variety in this lot!

If you'll allow one of them to be a revenue, then this pair from Costa Rica will fit in...

The overprint turns it into a postage stamp.
