I don't know too much about these sort of covers, and/or whether or not there may be fakes out there, but according to my 2011 Scott Specialized Catalog they offer this explanation:

"Established by Joseph E. Dunham about 1850. In 1851, Dunham acquired Messenkope's Union Square Post Office, operating the combined posts until 1854 of 1855. The business was sold in 1855 to Phineas C. Godfrey."

I'd also be careful to note that the 141L1 is the dark green variety; the 141L2 is in light apple green. I have not seen enough of these to compare one to the other, to confirm the color variety shown.

Used values on cover for the 141L1 is $900; for the 141L2 it is $700. However, the values noted are to be "on cover, tied by handstamp". In the example you posted, the handstamp is not directly tied to the stamp, so I'm not sure how that would affect catalog values, however, I expect it would be less. Likewise, the fold in the cover, which extends to a fold in the stamp would also diminish some value, just not sure to what extent.

Here is another one from the same correspondences.

Your cover is not in great shape. This will effect the value. The one above sold for $170 in 2006. I will see if I can find some info on how many 141L2s are on cover.

Thank you much! I'll be passing on this due to the info you've provided to me. Thank you and this is why I love S.C.F. as a such a valuable resource! I'll wait for one that is not in question for obvious reasons. Besides the bid only up to about $4.00 with a day to go...

here if anyone feels froggy here is the link

While I note you "passed" this ebay offer up, did you realize that the item is the cover FRONT only; not the entire envelope? That would also diminish any potential value considerably.

Notwithstanding your interest (or lack thereof) of the cover previously posted, let me share this five page link providing a detailed story on the life of David Maulden Perine, the addressee shown on this material.

I don't know that I've ever read such an in-depth and detailed biography on a man from that time in history, that started in office at the young age of 14 and stayed on until his retirement some forty years later!

Quite an interesting read on a personality from that era.

Thank you WT1 and I knew straight off it was just the front but if I intend to buy something like this I want absolutely no doubt to it's authenticity. I'm sure it will make someone happy but just not right for me right now. -Jeff
PS Thank you!
