The latest Beyond the Perf stamp design released just this morning:

Quote:
The U.S. Postal Service honors nearly 250 years of California history with the issuance of the Carmel Mission Express Mail® stamp. Often described as one of the most beautiful mission churches in the state, Carmel Mission is known for its dome-shaped bell tower and elaborate star-shaped window.

In saturated colors reminiscent of a vintage poster, the stamp art depicts the façade of the Carmel Mission church in Carmel, California.

Formally known as Mission San Carlos Borroméo del Río Carmelo, Carmel Mission was founded on June 3, 1770. It was the second in what would become a chain of 21 Spanish missions along the coast of California, each positioned about one day's ride on horseback from the next. It was also the second mission established by Father Junípero Serra (1713-1784), the founder of the California mission system. Father Serra is buried in the mission church.

This historic site is open to the public and welcomes some 150,000 visitors each year.

Designed by art director Phil Jordan, the stamp features an illustration created by artist Dan Cosgrove.

Like many of these high value stamps, the cost of collecting them far exceeds their worth, and I wouldn't think the demand for the stamp will be that high. Nevertheless, the design is attractive.

There is something cartoon-like about the design and many recent designs, indeed, which I do not like. The Christmas decoration and Boy Scout Scouting stamp are other recent examples.

Edit: I will say that I do like the subject matter, though.

Well I'm glad some collectors will be going out to buy it. For me, it is yet another reason not go get back into comprehensively collecting new US stamp issues.

I guess for USPS, you win some, you lose some. The problem, of course, is that it has been more of the latter than the former.

That is one of the best looking US stamps I have seen in quite awhile.

What rate is that for?

Thanks Cjd.

This is obviously the highest US value issued so far.

Correct?

As far as I know, you are correct ... it is the highest value stamp to be issued to-date.

As I mentioned on another thread, I think the challenge for these high value stamps are going to be finding them in decent used condition following legitimate postal use. When we get into stamps of this value, most users would rely on a postage meter either at an office or at the USPS; only collectors would be inclined to keep an inventory of such expensive mint stamps on hand.
