Found this stamp in a box of random stamps. Its a common stamp, but I can't identify the overprint. Didn't see it in Scott. Reads ?ERANG.

there was a place in the Netherlands Indies that was called Serang. In the NI this type of cancellation was used for some time

Thanks Hans, I can see where it might be taken for an overprint..when I saw the topic I thought it might have been about Dutch stamps that Indonesia overprinted around 1948-1949 !

I thought it was an overprint as there were no other features, such as wavy line, like a postmark normally would have. I don't know. It still looks like an overprint to me. If its a cancelation, what is the purpose of canceling it from a specific city or region?

The cancellation used on this stamp is called in dutch a "langstempel" . the English translation is long stamp ( although I am not sure that this is correct English). Another example of such a langstempel is given here



Langstempels are often combined with other types of cancellations
