Hi all, I've been trying to learn more about precancels...full time job!
anyway, I've searched online for info regarding this Rochester NY precancel. I've found 2 (different stamp)selling on ebay for quite a bit, both precancels were discribed as rare. Although in our archives Rochester is discribed as common. Does rarity depend on the particular stamp as well?

thanks!

I don't know about the actual precancel (nice one by looks) but on ebay the use of the word Rare is sometimes only a draw for bidders to loosen their purse strings and bid freely of their wealth. Doesn't mean it is actually rare, no.

Any extra descriptive words are sometimes (mostly) the personal opinion of the seller.

Not really rare. It's a bureau precancel PSS# 61 for Rochester, NY.

I am a firm believer that the word "RARE" is used all too often. This is done a lot in ebay and other online auctions.

I have seen 'rare' Hitler heads, queen heads, cancels etc etc and in the vast majority of cases they are not rare at all.

My opinion of course

Rarity does depend on the underlying stamp. The rare Rochester precancel is on Scott 1303 the 1965 4-cent coil stamp. The mirror image is not really mirror. They are two diffferent typefaces. The left is called a DLE, locally applied here in Rochester. The right is a bureau issue - the precancel applied in WashDC at the time the stamps were printed. Both very common.

This album page shows the 20 basic precancel styles from Rochester. All are very common except the L-5.

Left stamp is PSS Type 247; Right Stamp is PSS Type 61 (and the third stamp in my previous scan is a PSS Type 43). Many different precancel varieties exist all from the same city.
