New Member, Former Lurker

Hi,

I am a retired microbiologist ready to get in to my collection with a little more depth. During my employment years I was pretty much a space-filler and an accumulator. Now I want to learn more about what I have, THEN figure out what more to acquire. I'm sure I will still fill spaces and accumulate but I hope I can do it with a little more savvy.

My grandfather started me collecting when I was 4 years old and I have many fond memories of that connection with him. (Nudge to anyone who wants to get closer to someone and get more young people involved in collecting!)I inherited his collection so I have about 110 years worth--- some of value, most of none.

I collect US and microscope, laboratory and microbe topicals. I also have my grandfather's pre-1965 US and British Commonwealth albums, but I have left them as they were. I like to remember our times together when I look at them.

I have spent many hours lurking and am impressed with the knowledge available here--- FOR FREE!! Many of my questions have already been answered using the 'search' function. How on earth will I have 50 meaningful posts to add?!?!

Welcome Karen. You are right about the load of information here and yes for free: I feel like a freeloader most of the time. And I love your story about your grandfather as that too is how I got started in this. We can do some learning together. Enjoy.

Yes welcome, I also have learned a lot from this forum. There may be a stamp you might not know about, just ask and bang these people here are so knowledgeable you will have pretty much all you need to know about that stamp. This forum is friendly and has given me a warm feeling inside. I hope your time here will also be as happy for you as it has been for me and I only have 11 post to date and growing.

Have you read the topics 'You may be a stamp collector . . .' #1 and #2 ? Accumulating is part of stamp collecting. Well, it seems to happen no matter what you do anyway.

My brother is in the microbiology section of the hospital here! Neat! I will have to tell him. He still has his old collection from when young but family duties called. He can still appreciate a good stamp when he sees one. I think all that swabbing and microscoping does one good for being a stamp collector.

Getting posts in is easy when you help those who know less than you do and you know a ton now after reading the posts on here. Well, relatively. There is so much to know and do in stamp collecting and philately that having just one nugget of good info is a big thng when others need it and you can share.

Welcome Karen, I'm sure you will enjoy the forum. 50 posts will fly by, asking questions is just as important as answering them, as it leads us all off in new directions and expands our horizons. Have fun and I look forward to seeing some of your collection.

Karen, glad to have you join up. Your 50 posts will fly by and you will be a veteran here in no time. I sure would like to see some of your topicals if you can throw up a few scans. I dont think we have spent much time discussing those two topicals, so you have a WINNER. Again, welcome and glad to have you here. - Jeff

Awesome! And welcome to the board. I also got started by my grandparents and am just now learning about what I have and finishing the sets and such. Stick around you'll have a blast here and learn more than you'd ever thought possible about your stamps!
Also, for the record I'm a mycologist so I know a little bit about microbiology through my field of expertise. Penn State trained if that makes a difference at all? -Jeff

Welcome Karen.

You'd be surprised at how quickly 50 posts will come. You can simply comment on a post. That's what I do as my knowledge of this wonderful hobby is still limited. The meaningful is in there because some people would join and spend one day putting a one word comment on everything just to bump up their posts. Our wonderful moderators catch on to these guys quickly and it is the exception not the norm on this forum. So don't be afraid to post as all comments are welcome here.

My scanner is broken---FRUSTRATING!! Makes a grinding sound. I'll have to break down and get a new one. Bites into my stamp budget. :(
