Hi all I got this cover in an old box of my own collection lying around and I forget why I had it in the first place. The post marks are worn off but someone has written in pencil 1st Aug 64 and I assume 1864? Now to the stamp is it worth much? I consulted a catalog and I think it is number 64. Can anyone verify this? And the value? As I am going to sell it.

I would be curious why you think it is #64... the pencil mark on the cover is #65. |

Hi the pencil mark looks like #64 to me and the stamp matches #64 in the American catalog. I just can't be 100% here. |

I think what he means is that the 64 is part of the date, Aug, 1 - 64. Underneath the Stamp itself someone penciled in #65 with clearly a # sign for catalog number. It is certainly too difficult to tell colors from scans but if you zoom in on the Stamp and scan just the Stamp instead of the entire cover, then post it in the US Classics thread there are a few people who have been quite active in this particular stamp and the Pink ones. |

Ok now there are several variations of the #65 are we sure this is the one worth $3? and not 65a b or c etc? I have listed it for a few bucks see how it goes selling. Dam I wish it were #64! |

I probably would have held back on selling it until I knew for sure what it was. What if the previous owner didn't do their homework and it actually is a 64 or 64B ? The tricky part about selling stamps is to know 100% for sure what you are listing / selling. I'd think about pulling the item for further research. |

One art to drawing attention to your listing is in crafting the title and description. In order to maximize this opportunity, you have to have a good handle on what it is that you are selling.
Some people will troll through unpromising listings to find poorly described items, and that will work itself out in an auction format, as long as two different bidders have the patience and ability to look for and recognize a diamond in the rough.
Far better to do the work for your bidders and put it out there on a silver platter. To do otherwise leaves money on the table.
My 2d.
[edit: There is nothing wrong with leaving money on the table...I only mentioned it because you're hoping to structure this as a business.] |

Not sure how to look at this one-- I think with the caliber of a few of the others that are listed I personally would double check - Also it is worded to almost assume its a 64 even with the edit underneath. Just trying to point things out from all sides not stirring the pot. Bottom line its worth what someone will pay. |

Ho all, fabulous commentary here on this cover. I have had to end the ebay listing as I feel it was incorrectly listed. Even though it had 3 bidders on it. Okay some advise please. How would I tell if it is actually a 65 or 65B? What does the pencil mark 62 mean? I will place the below image of the stamp only under US Covers as suggested, and see what reaction I get. Thanks 4 all ur helps. |

62 may be an older catalogue's number from years ago or, alternately, a different catalogue's number for the stamp, perhaps Stanley Gibbons or other catalogues that did not use Scott's numbering system years ago that no longer exist now. |
