Some time ago I mentioned in a thread to having many years ago read two excellent travel books by HV Morton. The first was In Search of England, which evolved from Morton promising himself to travel the entire country should he arrive back there alive. He did and made the journey and described what he saw.

This book was followed many decades later by I Saw Two Englands, which retraced his original route and described the changes that had occurred in the meantime. Below is a map of the route that he followed from the first book and I thought it would be a great topic if people could provide postmarks (cancels) from the villages and towns that he passed through and describes. The route is a black line on the map and you may have to use a magnifying glass to see it. The first place he mentions visiting on leaving London is Bucklebury, which is not shown on the map. I, of course do not have a single cancel to show.

Edit: because of the poor map quality I am placing the names in staged sequence. Here is the first stage:
London Windsor Bucklebury Reading Newbury Whitechurch Winchester Romsey Southhamton

Great story cynical

Thanks for sharing. I will try to look for postmarks later. Apparently I have to learn how to use the snowblower as my better half is going away for six weeks. I prefer shovelling but I'll humour him.

One thing I can't read the town. could you list a few of them to start with. When I get a chance I'll go online and find a site that may list them.

Dianne

Dianne: Morton made the trip in the 1920s and the book was published by Methuen in 1927. I have the later Penguin paperback edition that is yellowed and dog-eared hence the poor map. I will divide the trip into stages with the first stage being London to Southampton and will place the community names for each stage under the map in the first post. There is a problem that I didn't foresee in that some of the smaller villages that he visited are not shown on the map.
