Ameristamp Expo 2012

I spent the better part of Saturday at the show. Wonderful exhibits with the best and most interesting, for me, was the cover collection from the Confederate Generals. I can't say that it was complete but it took up several frames. And yes, the APS did display their copy of the famous U.S. C3a. I only bought a few revenue stamps, a couple of silks and imperfs.

The deal of the day was my purchase of Dr. Chase's book "The 3 cent Stamp of the United States 1851-1857 Issue" and Vol. 1 & 2 of Stanley Ashbrook's "The United States One Cent Stamp of 1851-1857, signed by Ashbrook. The fact that I was told about the sale by Bill Wiese made it a bit more special as I had not met Bill before though have used his services on a few occasions.

The best, and the most enjoyable part of the trip was meeting up with fellow SCF & VSC member Ray MacIntire. He and David Schumacher, one of the more informed collectors that I have ever met, had interesting discussions for hours. One can learn some stuff if one will but listen.

It was great to put faces with names and even better to stay within my budget, I left my checkbook in my truck! I'll post some picture when I get back to Florida next week.

We have a stamp show in March here. I will try to remember to take good pictures to share with you guys.

It is the last day at the Ameristamp Expo 2012. I have purchased a few covers (as would be expected by a cover lover, I guess). Since I have a modest check collection (which SCF members of played a part in building), I did purchase a pile of approximately 300 checks indicating "To the Imperial Bank of Canada, Winnipeg, Man.", each with a revenue stamp attached.Dates are in the 1918 - 1921 range. Also picjed up several recent covers with interesting error on the cachet which I will post when I get home.

Old canadian checks are harder to come by than might be expected. I know nothing about them personally but for whatever reason I was told they can command a premium and have some high rarity factors for certain banks/ locations. Look forward to the pics.
