Is "Memory Cards" the official or philatelic name for German stamps in this format? I have a bunch of these as well from the 1930's-1940's, but I just thought it was a way to save paper in tough times.

Dear Bujutsu,
They are very impressive, as are your photos of them, thank you for sharing. Do you have an extensive collection of German stamps also?

Thank you all.

I believe that the term "Memory Cards" is a term created philatelically. Don't quote me though lol.

Yes, my collection of Germany is quite large. I started out from a small binder and now have several of them for Germany alone. Still looking for goodies though <G>

The German word for these type of sheets doesn't translate well. I commonly see these referred to as Erinnerungskarte, which literally translates as memory card, reminder card, or memento card. The more accurate term is probably souvenir sheet or commemorative sheet, but the use of modern translators (Google Translate) causes the term to keep perpetuating.

Nice one, Cjd. I absolutely love the design of those GG Red Cross issues.

I've seen one card from the 1960's that commemorated John F. Kennedy and it used the word, "Gedenkkarte". It didn't translate well either - "Commemorative map".

Like those above:

Yes and No Postmaster

A Souvenir Sheet or Commemorative sheet would be the actual stamps themselves. Since these are stamps on 'card', and they are commemorating a particular event, they have been given the term memory 'card' or memory 'sheet'

So I have been told anyway

That's correct, Bujutsu. I don't know why I typed "sheet" unless by sheer force of habit.

These 'memory cards' are very attractive. They all seem to have been officially produced and issued.

It would be fun to make your own 'memory'cards' and get them postmarked on a relevant date to the 'memory' and perhaps at a relevant location...

Agreed Perf14

I can imagine the types that could be produced. For each new issue that comes out it would be great to see what can be done especially now in this computer age.
