mass- have you put this under high magnification? Is there anything on the surface of the stamp that is covering up the top part of the "o"?

That's what it looks like to me. Love to know what you find out.
The 3c 1861 was a very well printed stamp with very few errors for the amount printed-- remember that it was the primary stamp used for letter mailing, under 1oz, for 8 years. Over a billion of these, and there are some double transfers, but not a lot of significant printing errors, other than perf issues and other freaks.

Thanks, Ray

Looks like there is a dark line of something going across the top that would touch right where the O of postage is located? Need a higher resolution scan of that spot. Very nice stamp with the blue cancel though!

It very well may be some adherence but to me it almost appears that the scroll work intrudes into the O's field. I blew it up a bit from the original pic so maybe you can see what I am seeing? Could it have been a repair possibly? I don't know but I do know that if this is a legitimate error it should be documented somewhere. I'd love to see a 1200+ dpi scan of it but this will have to do for now I guess.

Couple of other possibilities: A tool or something being dropped onto the plate causing a small dig or gouge which them filled up with ink during the inking of the plate (which should then be a consistent flaw during the plate use) or perhaps just s spot of excess ink that migrated to that spot (which would not be consistent with the use of the plate). And I suppose there are other possibilities? In any event, unless its a consistent flaw shown on multiple copies of the issue, I believe it would be a EFO rather than an error, and therefore probably not listed in references. A bit off-center, but still a nice #65
