I have had this product sitting on my self for several years now and finally decided to use it on my self-adhesive stamps. The product is called Goof-Off. See link. (This is not an endorsement.)

The active ingredient is Xylene. Again see link for further information. They do have a health warning section.

I did this in my outside shed with the door wide open. I spread it into a container and then soaked the stamps for about 5 to 10 minutes. I used a pair of needle nose pliers and a very thin screw drive to pick it up with and remove the stamp from the paper. After drying I placed them in talcum power because the glue was still sticky. This also helped to reduce/remove the smell.

As you can see only the Mother Teresa and Gary Cooper did not do well. Looks like the Xylene also removed the colors from the stamps. All the others are fine from what I can tell. I have more to press and then scan. When I have a chance I will try to make a video and post it to YouTube.

Thanks for posting results Ray.
White spirits is the answer, apart from long term unknown.

rod,

Bought some mineral spirits a week ago with great results, no damaged stamps. Thanks for the input. Ray

I've used that product, Goof-Off, a number of times cleaning up old paint off of baseboards etc (smells just like lighter fluid) and I would stress, as Ray suggested, use it in a very well ventilated place. You can get light headed pretty quickly.
