Greetings from the "upper left corner" of the US!

My name is Peter, and whereas I have been a "lurker" member here for a while, this is my first time to post.

I've been a stamp collector since about age six or seven-- my dad got me into stamp collecting as a way to learn about geography and different cultures around the world.

These days I collect primarily stamps and postal history from Scandinavia. I only collect postally used stamps, no mint. My "specialist" areas include town cancels on Sweden no. 1-51, a specialized study of Sweden's 1872-1892 "ringtyp" issues, and the 1870-1903 "Bicolour" issues from Denmark.

In case that sounds "terribly serious," I also collect cats on stamps, and stamps postmarked on my birthday (any year) of August 30th.

Cheers,
Peter

Thanks for the warm welcome! I look forward to participating more in the community.

I'll probably spend a little time "watching how others do things" before adding some collection items-- although I did add a somewhat "pictorial" post, last night.

@jhlovell: If you mean the old ones with the colored oval inside a different colored frame, yes! That's one of my areas of speciality. Otherwise, the only "posthorns" I'm familiar with come from Norway...

Regards,
Peter

Welcome Peter / Scanstamps!

Wow, every time I come to StampComm, I learn something new!
I have never heard of "posthorns" so I went to Google images...
musical horn on stamps? What does that mean? I have a bunch from different countries, but am guessing some are pretty common....

I see that the horn is in a loop, what kind of horn is it?
Also, I see it big end facing both left and right, but I don't see one that is upside down, where the tip and big end are facing south, I wonder why?

I grew up in Tacoma, I do miss it! You didn't mention your age, which is fine, but was wondering since you have been collecting since 6 or 7, if that means you have been collecting for 10 years or 80! I have only been collecting for a few years so I really don't think I know a whole lot.

Peter, would love to see some "scanstamps" of yours. I have NO idea what a town cancel is, so if you or anyone reading this, has some, please do share your images. What is the difference between a town and postal cancel?

I looked up bicolour stamps from Denmark too, because I didn't know about these. Looks like a solid oval color inside with a different color in the background. How interesting!

Have a good day!

Sue, and everyone, a post horn is a type of horn, shown on many European stamps and used as all or part of the symbol of many European Post Offices, that was blown by a post rider (rides a horse) in years gone by to announce his arrival to villagers so they knew the post (mails) had arrived.

There are many stamps, some US , that show a post rider, and many stamps and cancels that show a post horn.

A Town cancel is a postal cancel or post office cancel that some people collect, that shows the name of the town or city. In other words it is a common thing really.

There are street cancels from years ago also, which showed the street name and the town name on a cancellation or postmark (dated cancel).

part of the problem understanding all this strange terminology is that a lot of terms originated years ago but are still in use today. Or the term has been shortened or changed slightly.

For example to post a letter in the post, or to mail a letter, mean the same thing. The term 'in the post' is a quaint way of saying that the letter should be included in the post rider's other lot of letters in his bag, so as to be carried by him to the next desination or the next large town where it would be redirected.

If you say the letter is in the post or the letter is in the mails it kind of means the same thing. Mails has been shortened to just Mail lately. The mails is the term for a general idea for all the letters carried by all the post riders. Or, now, in the mail stream.

Lots of fun uses of words and descriptions that evoke a picture of a flowing bunch of letters and packages.

Oh my Bounty coconut / chocolate bar!

No one can afford me! I had to turn Bill Gates away!

Course, if someone just shows up and wants to sit down and talk stamps, well, that's a different story. I wouldn't turn down a Tim's coffee or a diet soda either.

Thanks for your support!

It's nice to be here-- this is certainly a very friendly place!

Sue, I will certainly be posting items from my collections, as I get a bit more familiar with the "lay of the land" here.

As for my age... well, I've been collecting for 45 years, so that makes me 51!

I've been poking around the different subforums... still trying to figure out where I'd post bits and pieces from my collection-- I haven't seen a subforum called "Member Collections" or anything like that.

I'm also trying to figure out how to add a personal avatar and a signature line. I see lots of folks using avatars OTHER than the ones in the short list that comes up on the "edit profile" panel... but I see no option for "upload your own avatar." As far as I can tell, you can only upload an image into a thread.

So, still learning!
~Peter

Re Avatars:

Either
click 'Forum Home' button at top or
click 'All Forums' link at top . . .

Scroll to bottom to a forum called 'Stamp Community Support' and
click it to enter . . .

There are some Sticky topics (stay at top) to explain things.

Then, at top,
click 'New Topic' link and
enter you avatar request and upload a pic to add to topic.

Wait patiently.
One member mentioned that avatars are done once a month.

To change avatar follow same procedure.

Well I think our friend Peter, actually means these Denmark stamps:

There, below the number, you can see a post-horn, as Jeff correctly pointed.

As for the Swedish "ringtyp" stamps. I think he means this one:

I'm also keen on Scandinavian stamps, although on a much more "amateur" way, than our new friend.
Welcome Peter, from Barcelona, Catalonia, Europe. I hope you'll enjoy the forum.

This sure is a friendly place! I've been part of many "Philatelic Phorums" over the years, and more than a few (sadly) seem to be presided over by a small core group who competitively "grandstand" over "how much they know" about the most esoteric corners of stamp collecting. Not saying specialized knowledge doesn't have its place... maybe I'm just more of a "people person" than many old-time collectors...

@Puzzler: Thanks for the info re. avatars. I was a little mystified as to how that worked.

@Cursus: Yes, those are the two types of classic Scandinavian stamps I specialize in. The Danish stamps are known as "Tofarvet" in Danish, or "Bicolours" in English speaking circles. The Swedish stamps are called "Ringtyp" in Swedish, and generally referred to as "Circle Types" in English.

Regards,
Peter
