Wow, some great cancels there, Jay. Especially love that Battle of Britain with the front view of the airplane.
I wonder why Southend-on-Sea was chosen as the location for the Machin FDCs in 1967? Any significance you think?

James I honestly have no earthly idea. On what research I done Only keep coming up with the Bletchly park info on the war and it's code breaking operations headquarters but I can't see a connection betwixt the two however I'm not very versed in English geography and history.

Most big towns and cities had FIRST DAY facilities. Just happens that Southend on Sea was local to that collector.

Your Welsh language covers are note worthy... and I like the Northern Ireland one too.

..and that 17th April 1971 pair of stamps looks interesting. Looks like a vertical pair from a booklet to me. Machin expert needed though.

Nice group of covers,I_love_stamps.
Interesting to note that the cover dated 25th March 1970 from County Derry in Northern Ireland has a Northern Irish regional stamp, and the Welsh one below it and the Welsh one at the end both have Welsh regional stamps. I don't know much Welsh, but Cymru means Wales, pronounced Cumree, I think (apologies to any Welsh speakers!).

My friend Steve said this about the second one down:

Quote:
well I can say that #2 was issued and cancelled at the RAF base Biggin Hill through the BFPO.
Biggin Hill was a major part of the Battle of Britain campaign as it was the closest airport to the channel, and the spitfires and hurricanes were scrambled from this airfield.
the RAF no longer use Biggin Hill as a base for aircraft, but a museum, a chapel and some of the married quarters still exist there to commemerate the fallen heroes.
