I purchased this cover today so I don't have it in hand thus the image is not mine. However, I do have some concerns. I can't tell, for sure, if the stamps are tied to the cover or if its another manufactured example that I have seen so many times on ebay. In addition, I'm not sure if the cancellations are from the same cancellation device. I welcome opinions, good or bad.

On another note, Thanks Ron for the 64b, I look forward to adding it to my collection.

Art,

The 3c appears to be tied at the bottom and the killer on both stamps seems to have been the same barred circle but applied with a different orientation. Placement of the CDS in relation to the stamps also seems appropriate. I'm still trying to figure out why the additional 1c was applied -- more than 1/2 ounce perhaps?

I'm not a big US cover collector but I gotta say that is a beauty. Almost like the 1c was added just to blend with the artwork- The Blue and reds on the lady and the flag coincide perfectly with color of the stamps. Can see how you would think it may have been artificially designed but hopefully not. Either way she deserves a page all of her own.

Steve,

Its the orientation that 1st gave me pause. One would think that the person canceling the stamps would cancel them at the same time at the same way. Or, it could be that it was after the 3 cent was cancelled it was determined that the envelope needed additional postage? just guessing. The 2nd concern is the real faint tying to the cover. I still don't really see it.

The 1c is added to the 3c because of the local "drop rate". Some post offices didn't deliver to homes, thus an extra penny for local delivery. Nice cover, they aren't scarce, but not common compared with the millions of 3c covers. Even nicer with the patriotic cover.

Can't comment on the authenticity-- nice cover though, Art!

Art, as Ray has just said, nice Civil War patriotic cover. Read a great article in BNA Topics, the journal of the British North America Philatelic Society this past year of these covers used in Canada. I wonder if there's a catalogue of the cachets created during this time?

Art, I saw that cover on ebay myself. My first thought was that the 1c stamp had been added. It is hard to say without having the cover in hand. You should read the chapter on Carrier's written by Elliot Perry in Volume II of your Ashbrook books on the 1c 1851-57 stamps. If the 1c stamp belongs there it was probably to pay a carrier to take the letter to the post office in North Bridgewater. The 1c delivery fee would have likely been collected in cash for a total of 5 cents altogether.
