Has anyone seen a "Sent Notice of Detention" on covers from 1890 period?
The cover was sent by Alex Lewis who was an industrialist and former mayor of Detroit to the daughter of a friend that was gravely ill. I was wondering if the detention was from a disease outbreak or political chicanery. Has anyone seen anything similar?

Very interesting 1847bill

This is the first time I have ever seen that marking at all.

It makes me wonder what kind of athority, postal or otherwise, was responsible for this marking.

That's what it is. The first postmark is partially covered by the stamp. They smacked the stamp with a oval duplex to cancel it. nothing evil going on, he just forgot the stamp!

I can live with this explanation as long as we don't see a marking stating "Held For Ransom".
