An interesting bit of postal history...before reading this article I never knew the mailboxes shown above were known as the "Joroleman Mailbox"--and that they date back as far as 1915. Here's the story:

That's very interesting, thanks wt1. I live in the country and, in fact, just came in from collecting mail from my Joroleman. We can still put mail in it, raise the flag and have the maillady collect them. I wonder how long that service is going to last.

We are on our third mailbox in four years. A constant victim of snowplows and bored country teenagers with baseball bats and too much time on their hands.
