Great photo of Pacaya (8,373 ft). I've climbed Pacaya a number of times. It is not at hand at the moment but there is a stamp from the late 90s showing Pacaya erupting. Except for the cone it is a relatively easy volcano to climb. Of the 3 volcanos in the background of the photo, I have also climbed Agua (12,336 feet).
Phil, Pacaya would be the one to see up close. One can even rent a horse, with guide, if desired. Pacaya is a complex volcano which means it displays two or more characteristics of different types of volcano. One obstacle to climbing it would be if it is overly active. Minor lava flows are not considered dangerous and there is constant monitoring of the volcano to determine if it should be temporarily closed to the public. A second obstacle would be if the local population has a gripe with the government and they block entrance to the volcano.
timbres667..thank you, when I join something I tend to stick with it..have been a member since 1999..dues are 20 dollars a year for the U.S. and Canada and I get 4 magazines posted with Guatemala stamps..the editor Cecile is a Swiss lady whose father was the Swiss ambassador to Guatemala..she does a terrific job but is 74 years old and would like someone younger to take over...just like everywhere else !
philb Hope she can do it many more years. Our neighbour is 92 years old and still driving a car. But I hope she find someone in the coming years. It would be such a shame this magazine stop publication.
