I found a stamp store nearby! I took Caitlin there to get her a pair of tongs and I bought hinges and mounts for us. I picked these up for $1 each. I liked them because on the back of each it has the history behind the stamp, and the date it was issued. The actual size is 8" x 4". I bought these and a couple for Caitlin. I wanted her to see(without my saying anything) that there is a history behind every stamp she sees. He also has 2 large boxes of stamp blocks at 10 cents above face value. His store is filled with US and world stamps,SS, covers, (I was drooling of course). I didn't go overboard, but Catlin and I had fun picking out a few things. Did I go wrong?

It sounds to me like you did absolutely great! You got to do something I love to do but can't - go to a store to see and touch the stamps I'm thinking about buying.

P.S. Caitlin's package will be in the mail tomorrow.

Thanks nr, there was a bunch of these at the store, so we may pick up a few more. Those and the boxes full of PB's- I already picked up three of those.

laswabbie, so sorry you don't have one local. This store is floor to ceiling with shelves of volumes, he even has a mint set of the baby Zeps. He has tables and chairs where you can sit down and just go through volumes and boxes, and even hands you tongs and a piece of paper to write the price down of whatever you pick out! This was the owner, who said if I ever have any questions or problems he would help. Nice!Bottom line is- Cait and I had fun.
Thanks laswabbie, for sending her a package. After the trip to the store yesterday I definitely think she has "the fever" for stamp collecting.

Nice US history commemoratives...one of the best ways to learn about history is to collect and research stamps and coins...enjoy your new acquisitions!

Rockinrobin, I am not sure what these are but I am extremely interested in acquiring copies for my Flag Collection.
Is there any chance they have duplicates in this interesting Stamp store???
If there is any chance I will make a great deal........

The Postmasters of American US History in Mint Stamps were offered with a binder trimmed in gold and I think up to 175 stamps. These sets came with the famous Certificate of Authenticity. The feature though was that they came with an official, out of issue Mint US Commemorative Postage Stamp. This was a mass marketed product though not very popular among stamp collectors. I don't have the exact years for this series but they have offered other products such as FDC's, combinations of stamps & coins and a host of other related products.

One thing to note is that this was not an official USPS product.

I don't remember the original prices however most sources list each page at around 25 cents. On the other hand I have seen asking prices as high as $400 for a 175 page / stamp in the original green binder.

The wonderful thing about stamps is the various ways to collect in this hobby. If you find an interesting way to enjoy the hobby then it becomes priceless. I wouldn't place the emphasis on the cost but on the joy that it brings to your hobby.

I always thought these would look nice in a frame and hung on the wall.

Sorry so late in getting back to all of you- we were hit by (hurricane)Ike here in Ohio. (Check out my message under "Help-my daughter wants to start stamp collecting")

londonbus - no need to keep your fingers crossed! You can have the Betsy Ross card and I will pick up a few more with flags. Email your address to me and I will let you know when they are on the way. He had a small box of these at the store!(If he doesn't have electricity at the store, it might be a little bit)

atlas- thanks- we are enjoying our new stamps and stamp cards!

gussyboy- if you ever get to Columbus, OH, look me up! I'd be glad to take you.

Dianne- Caitlin and I had fun going through albums, bins and boxes! I am going back to look through the 2 large boxes of PB's- only 10 cents above face value I have decided to add a lot of these to my collection.

rlorenz- will be going back shortly- I forgot to get glassines(if this isn't a good excuse, I don't know what is).

mk- thanks for the info! The cards also have gold trim on them. Cait and I both like them, so I know we will be getting more, even if they aren't worth anything. I want her to collect for the joy of it, not the price. So yes, you are right, they are "priceless". Hanging them on the wall...hmmm..not a bad idea.

Londonbus1- There was a small box of these cards in the store. I am sure there are plenty with flags on them. I will pick up some next time I go. Maybe this weekend or next. I will also put aside the flag stamps you asked about. The 2 from Romania are not perforated, so I take it that you want them too? Let me know.
